What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the science and clinical practice of straightening teeth.  The American Association of Orthodontists has also accepted facial and skeletal growth modification or orthopedics as another component of orthodontics.

Do teeth straighten by themselves?

Most dental or skeletal problems are not self-correcting.  Just waiting for a patient to grow out of a harmful pattern wastes precious treatment time. Once a patient has reached late adolescence, removal of teeth or surgery may be needed to correct the problems. Common causes of dental or skeletal problems include genetic inheritance, missing or extra teeth, medical problems such as mouth breathing due to chronic allergies or asthma, and bad habits such as thumb sucking.  Patients suffering from any of these conditions need to be seen by an orthodontist as soon as possible so that an appropriate treatment may be initiated.

What are the benefits of orthodontics?

  • Braces straighten crooked and crowded teeth and create beautiful smiles.  Straight teeth lead to healthier gums, greater longevity, and better function of teeth and jaws.

  • Certain appliances, used in conjunction with braces, can modify the facial bone structure and improve the growth pattern of the jaws.

  • Interceptive or preventive orthodontics can shorten the time spent in braces. Also, in some young patients with severe crowding, early treatment can eliminate the need for having teeth extracted.

  • Many clinical studies have shown that a great smile improves self-confidence, self-esteem, and social interactions.

When is the best time to consult with an orthodontist for children?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children see an orthodontic specialist for a screening by age 7. If parents, family dentist or physician note a problem, a child may be seen even earlier than 7 years of age. This early screening allows for prevention or more successful correction of growth and developmental problems since a child's bone structure is still growing.    Early orthodontic screening and treatment can help those patients with severe crowding that would otherwise need extraction of permanent teeth for correction. A great smile during those forming years of adolescence can lead to greater self-confidence and better socialization.

How does orthodontics benefit adults?

Keep in mind that orthodontics is not just for children and adolescents.  About 25% of orthodontic patients today are adults.  Tooth-colored braces and invisible orthodontics along with other developments in techniques have made adult orthodontics cosmetically acceptable and technically simple.  More adults are accepting orthodontic treatment these days, knowing that a beautiful smile is a healthier smile and looking great at any age may improve your personal, social, and professional life.  Dr. Mojdehi-Barnes's esthetic techniques do not interfere with your personal life and the office's flexible hours make adult treatment attainable even for those with busy lifestyles.
