Braces-Friendly Summer Recipes

Braces-Friendly Summer Recipes
Posted on 06/21/2018

At the office of Dr. Maryam Mojdehi-Barnes, we want all our patients to have a pleasant treatment experience. In a sense, orthodontic treatment is a two-way street as both the patient and his/her Allen orthodontist have responsibilities. While your orthodontist is responsible for moving your teeth into the desired position, you must do your part to make sure your treatment progresses as it should. A few of the things you must do include practicing good oral hygiene, keeping all your appointments and making sure you watch what you eat so you don't damage your braces.

Now that summer is here, we would like to share a few braces-friendly recipes that are perfect for enjoying when the weather is hot. All of these recipes are quick and easy to make.

Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie

This smoothie is creamy and refreshing and a cinch to make. This recipe makes three to four servings, depending on the size of the glasses you use.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups fresh strawberries, cleaned and hulled
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • 3 or 4 orange slices

Directions:

Place all ingredients except the orange slices into a blender and blend on high until the mixture is smooth. Pour into 3 or 4 tall glasses and add 1 orange slice to the rim of each glass before serving.

Omelet with Summer Veggies

This delicious omelet is a great way to start a busy summer day and it only takes a few minutes to make.

Ingredients:

  • Oil or butter
  • 2/3 cup frozen corn, thawed
  • ½ cup zucchini, chopped into small pieces
  • 3 tablespoons green onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • dash of salt & pepper
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons cheddar cheese

Directions:

Coat a saucepan with oil or butter and place on medium-high heat. Add the corn, zucchini & onions and saute for 4 minutes or until the veggies are tender. In a bowl, combine a dash of salt and a pinch of pepper, the water and eggs and stir with a whisk. Then heat a non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Coat the frying pan with oil or butter. Then pour the egg mixture into the pan and cook until the edges set. Lift the cooked edges of the omelet with a spatula while tilting the pan so the uncooked eggs come into contact with the hot pan. Then spoon the corn and zucchini mixture onto half of the omelet and sprinkle the cheese over the mixture. Fold the omelet in half over the corn/zucchini mixture and cook until cheese melts. Serve and enjoy!

Honey-Grilled Shrimp

This shrimp dish is easy and delicious and perfect for summer BBQs!

Ingredients:

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ tablespoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce (plus 2 tablespoons)
  • 2 tablespoons dry white wine
  • 1 tablespoons Italian salad dressing
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled & deveined with tails attached

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix together the garlic powder, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, wine and salad dressing. Add the shrimp and toss to coat. Cover and place in refrigerator for 1 hour. Preheat grill on high heat. Put the shrimp on skewers and discard the marinade. In a small bowl, stir together the honey, melted butter and 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce for basting. Lightly oil the grill and place the shrimp skewers on the grill and cook for about 3 minutes per side or until shrimp are opaque. Baste occasionally with the basting sauce. Serve with rice and enjoy!
